What happened
Cambodia is preparing to install automated cameras and a monitoring system at the Mekong Dolphin Monitoring, Surveillance and Conservation Centre in Kratie province. The Agriculture Ministry said camera images and information will help authorities identify high-risk areas, plan patrols and respond to illegal fishing. The system is expected to become operational by the end of 2026, and the project is supported by WWF and the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Special Fund.
Why it matters
If the system works as planned, conservation teams may be able to direct patrols to areas at greater risk and respond sooner to illegal fishing. The ministry says the effort is intended to protect Mekong dolphins over the long term.
Background
The centre is at the Anlung Kampi Dolphin Conservation Guard Station in Kratie province. The ministry also said officials would study solar power to reduce electricity costs and improve staff training and cooperation with partners. It reported six dolphin births in 2026 and said the national population was believed to be almost 120.
