What happened

The 15th Chaktomuk Short Film Festival ran from October 30 to November 2, screening 90 films from 33 countries, including 40 Cambodian films. Around 1,000 people attended in person, and the festival announced 10 award-winning films across local and international categories. Kim Sophea’s “Voices of Flowers in the Desert” won Best Cambodian Short Film, making her the first woman to receive that top local award.

Why it matters

The festival gave Cambodian filmmakers a chance to show their work alongside films from other countries. Its director said Sophea’s award could encourage young filmmakers, especially women, to make and share films.

Background

The festival was organised by the Sunflower Film Organisation under the theme “Stories Within and Around Us”. Its four international award winners included films from the Philippines, Romania and Slovakia, the UK, and France and the United States.

Key terms
